Overview

Are you an English Language Learner looking to improve your writing skills?  Do you want to strengthen your grammar and learn how to organize your thoughts in written assignments? Then this course is for you! 

Advanced Writing for English Language Learners will help you develop the writing skills necessary in professional and academic settings. You will develop strategies to write effectively in English, including paragraphs,  responses to short-answer questions as well as three-paragraph essays. Grammar practice and academic vocabulary will be embedded throughout each unit to improve your grammar and vocabulary skills. 

Upon completion of this course, many students will benefit from continuing their development of reading and writing skills in Developmental Writing. 

Curriculum

  • Improve usage of academic vocabulary and advanced grammar topics;
  • Distinguish between informal and formal writing styles;
  • Write clear and cohesive sentences, paragraphs, and responses to short-answer questions;
  •  Write a clear and cohesive three-paragraph essay in response to a prompt;
  • Improve fundamental grammar skills (capitalization, spelling, comma usage, sentence variety, elimination of run-on sentences, and proper citations);
  • Revise and edit writing for clarity based on feedback from instructors, coaches, and peers; and,
  • Gain confidence in overall writing abilities.

Cost

With financial aid, Guild students may be eligible to pay a fraction of the published cost to advance their education. 

Many Guild students pay as little as 10% of the published cost of the course to learn by taking advantage of:
  • Tuition assistance benefits from your employer.
  • The $2,500 American Opportunity Tax Credit and/or $2000 Lifetime Learning Credit. 
  • Guild's tuition discount, and no out-of-state tuition costs.

Schedule

You take this course online, at your own speed. In addition to your self-paced materials, you will also participate in live, virtual sessions for one hour each week with peers and an instructor. You will receive support from your personal coach and a lead instructor—both are committed to your success. 

This course is eight weeks long and will begin the second week of every month. 

*Required: Access to video camera on computer, smartphone or tablet for live sessions
